[REVIEW] THE DIRTY ROOTS - DIRTY ROOTS EP
Monday, 23 November 2009
Hello there folks, John here with good news from the demo mountain at Bruised Fruit.
In what I hope will be a regular feature, I'm going to post up reviews of the best music we receive from our in-pile to share with you. This fortnight's offering are The Dirty Roots
The Dirty Roots are a five piece Belfast based band who play some of the most soulful rhythm, blues and rock and roll I've ever heard. Citing influences from Dave Matthews to Robert Plant via Mississippi John Hurt, their newself-titled EP is nothing short of a genuine rough diamond.
The opening track Freight Train could easily have been conjured out of a boxcar by Howlin' Wolf himself. Time Alone nods to Jamie T and uses wonderful vocal harmonies to enhance a simple song performced with soul and heart. It wouldn't surprise me if The Healing had been written by Van Morrisson but it was these and Take Me Outta Here finishes off the experience by mixing Broken Social Scene and Ocean Colour Scene.
I never thought a new local band could take such an established genre such as this and re-invent it for the modern listener. Support slots with the likes of Foy Vance and others of his calibre can't be far off. No genuine music fan will fail to enjoy this band.
The Dirty Roots EP, "Dirty Roots", is released on Thursday 26th November www.myspace.com/thedirtyroots
