GRANDSTANDING - THE LAUNDRY SHOP
Thursday, 18 June 2009
Dublin threepiece The Laundry Shop are a match made in heaven - Formed in early 2007 by a Swedish lady and two Irish fellas as they describe themselves, they effortlessly marry the best of The Wannadies and the Super Furry Animals. Their new album "Grandstanding" is their latest release and the tastiest part of the wedding reception buffet and honeymoon rolled into one excellent LP.
Two of the songs that will leave you in no doubt how good this aural union sounds: "Terrified" and recent single "Highs and Lows" - with its clever but catchy chords, smart lyrics and dreamy production - it's easy to hear why it made the Irish Top 30.
Rock muscles are flexed on "Brighten The Ways", as if Fighting With Wire and Snow Patrol decided to meet in the park and write a really excellent pop song. Shades of Weezer crop up on "Say Goodnight and Wave Goodbye" and "The Fairy Lake", while the wistful "Taking Directions" and final track "Kiss and Tell" give more than a hint of Smashing Pumpkins.
This is simply a peach of an album to listen to - I could easily stick this on my CD player on the grim drive to work on a wet Monday and feel like I had the top down, on my way to Glastonbury, being soaked in raucous sunshine instead.
